What is the Teal Pumpkin Project?
The Teal Pumpkin Project was created by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education). It was inspired by local awareness building activities by the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee.
The idea behind the Teal Pumpkin is to provide allergy-friendly treats or small toys to those children who have allergies. Children who have severe allergies often cannot enjoy Halloween as they cannot enjoy most of the candy they collect (if they go trick or treating at all).
By putting a painted teal pumpkin on your doorstep, or by hanging a teal pumpkin sign near your front door, you’re signalling to trick or treaters who have food allergies that you have a treat or small toy that will accommodate them.
Essentially, by putting a teal pumpkin on your doorstep, you are being inclusive to ALL trick or treaters.
What Does a Teal Pumpkin Stand For?
The colour teal is used for food allergy awareness.
What Should I Pass Out for Halloween?
You may be tempted to simply find some peanut-free treats and pass them out for Halloween. However, there are many more food allergies in addition to nut allergies, and some, like egg or soy affect so many foods, especially processed foods like candy and chocolate. Instead of doing guess-work, a simpler alternative would be to offer non-candy Halloween treats.
You can easily offer candy AND non candy alternatives for Halloween. Simply have a bowl of candy and a separate bowl of non-candy alternatives.
Non-Candy Halloween Treat Alternatives
You can also use non-candy treat alternatives for other purposes. Many schools have designated themselves as candy-free zones. You can still spread a little Halloween cheer for your child’s class by passing out non-candy Halloween treats (you could also try these homemade healthy Halloween treats, whic are delcious!).
Likewise, if you are a teacher, or run activities with children, you may want to avoid caring for children with a sugar high. Passing out non-candy Halloween treats allows you to give a token without dealing with kids hopped up on sugar all day!
