Adorable Halloween Sensory Activity: Witch’s Potion
As Halloween approaches, we’ve been busy doing any and all activities I can think of to prepare and celebrate the holiday!
This is the first year Hannah really understands Halloween and is enjoying any and everything spooky.
A few months ago we tried this activity from View From A Step Stool. Hannah loved the foam, but wasn’t really crazy about the overall activity. I wanted to recreate the activity keeping the foam, but adding some dramatic play, which is Hannah’s favorite. And, of course, since it’s October, the activity had to be Halloween-related!
I found inspiration when I came across a plastic cauldron. It was perfect for creating a witch’s potion and foam would be perfect for a potion base! We grabbed a few potion ingredients and started casting spells!
There are so many ways to add math and literacy skills to this activity (listed at the bottom of the post).
Or, just let your kids use their imaginations and get their hands dirty!

To make this Halloween sensory activity you will need:
- A cauldron
- Spooky ingredients (I used frogs, spiders, worms and eyeballs)
- A spoon to stir with
- Cups
Potion Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup dish soap
- 2 cups water
- blue and yellow food colouring
Instructions for Witch’s Potion Halloween Sensory Activity
You will need to make the potion base first:
- Combine cornstarch, dish soap, food colouring and water in blender
- Be sure to add lots of yellow food colouring and fewer drops of blue. I used blue Dawn dish soap, so I only needed a couple drops.
- Blend together
- Pour in cauldron (Use quickly, as the foaminess of the potion will gradually decrease.)
Witch’s Potion Halloween Sensory Play Ideas
Let your child enjoy the foamy witch’s potion however they would like!
- Stir with a spoon
- Pouring into cups
- Adding magic ingredients (frogs, spiders, etc.)
Integrating Math and Literacy into Halloween Sensory Play
For Toddlers/Preschoolers:
Read a Book
Introduce your child to the concept of a witch with a not-too-scary board book like this one. Talk about what a magic potion is.
Sing a Song
Another way to introduce the concept of the witch’s potion is through a song. Try this cute one from Youtube.
Vocabulary Development
Talk about words like potion, cauldron, witch’s brew, ingredients, etc. that your child may not be familiar with.
Counting
Count magic ingredient items as you add them to the potion. Practice counting slowly, saying each number as you drop one item in the cauldron. If you say add four worms, can your toddler count and make a set of four?
Measurement
Use two different shaped cups (e.g. one tall, skinny cup and one short, wide cup). Ask your child which will hold more of the potion, then test to see if they were right.
Literacy
Write a recipe for a magic potion together. Talk about the letters and numbers you write as you record the recipe for the potion.
For Elementary Aged Children:
- Write magic potion recipes (make several recipes for different spells e.g. turn Dad into a frog, make my room clean itself)
- For extra fun, record the spells in a spell book like this one.
This Halloween sensory activity was a hit at out house. I hope it will provide just as much fun (and learning!) in your home too!
