Nature-based names are a popular name choice for many families. Nature-inspired names are boho, rustic and just a bit crunchy, without being weird. They’re generally easy to recognize and pronounce. 

With a nature-inspired name, you can be sure that your child’s name is not overused, but still very on trend and current.

Today, I’ve scoured the baby name charts for nature-inspired names for baby boys and baby girls that are popular, but not overused. I’ve selected names from the Top 200 baby names according to Social Security. These names are hip, but not overused, with only a few in the Top 20. You can be sure that your child’s name will be just as special as they are!

Nature Names for Girls

Luna

Luna is one of the most popular girl names on our list. Luna comes from the Latin word for the moon. Luna is a well known Harry Potter character as well. Lily

From the flower, a symbol for purity, Lily is a classic and lovely name for baby girls. 

Hazel

A type of a tree, or a shade of light brown. Hazel is an up and coming boho-chic name that is very on trend!

Violet

After the purple flower. Violet is quickly becoming a popular name and is poised to take on Lily, Rose and other popular names. If you like the name Violet, be sure to check out these other great names that are similar to Violet. 

Aurora

Aurora means ‘dawn’ and has its origins in Latin. Aurora was the Roman goddess of the sunrise. It was also the name of the princess in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, making it a sentimental favorite among princess fans. Savannah

English word for a large grassy plain. Savannah is a name that is not overused, but is still familiar and easy to pronounce. 

Nova

Willow

After the red gemstone which is the birthstone of July. Ruby is a great vintage baby name that has not been overused.

Autumn

Autumn is an English baby name that refers to the fall season.

Diana

Diana means divine, it refers to the Roman goddess of the moon, and more recently, Princess Diana. It’s seen growth on the charts for the last five years. Last year it rose in popularity from 230 to 184, its highest position in a decade.

Isla

Isla, pronounced eye-la, is a baby name originating in Scotland. There is a Scottish island called Islay, or it may be derived from the Gaelic word for ‘rocky place’. Isla is also the Spanish word for island. It’s one of my favorite boho names for girls. It entered the top 1000 in 2008 and moved from 103 to 82 last year. 

Ivy

From the small crawling plant of the same name. Ivy is a beautiful nature-inspired name for girls, which rose from 107 to to its highest ranking place ever, at 86, last year. 

Leilani

Leilani is a Hawaiian name that means ‘heavenly flower’. What a beautiful plant-inspired name for girls!

Rose

Associated with the flower of the same name, it was Norman and Germanic roots. It’s a beautiful one syllable name for girls. Despite being a classic, this name has steadily increased its position on the charts, reaching a 20 year high last year it rose from 141 to 123.

Iris

Iris is the classic purple and yellow flowering bulb that arrives to mark the start of spring. Iris is a recognizable name, but still fairly unique. Last year it rose from spot 148 to 138.

Eden

This name either comes from the Hebrew word meaning ‘pleasure or delight’, or the Sumerian word ‘meaning ‘plain’.

Daisy

The English word for the small white flower. Daisy is a sweet and simple name, perfect for a tiny baby.

Sienna

Sienna is a fairly modern baby name. It refers to the colour sienna, which is an reddish orange-brown. It moved from 222 to 186 last year.

Summer

Summer is an English baby name that refers to the season.

Brooke

Originally an English surname that refers to someone living near a brook or stream.

Oliver

Hunter is an English baby name that was originally an occupational surname for those who hunted. 

Leo

Leo is a two syllable baby name meaning ‘lion’ in Latin. Leo is a great three letter boy name! Last year it rose from 61 to 50, making it into the top 50 for the first time.

Ashton

Ashton was originally a surname meaning “ash tree town.” Ashton is one of many names that reflect the trend of using last names as given names. Although Ashton was quite popular in the early 2000’s, it’s risen steadily in popularity over the past five years, jumping 10 spots last year alone, from 138 to 128.

Brooks

Brooks literally means ‘dweller by a brook’. It was originally used as a surname before becoming a popular given name. Brooks is moving up the charts at a rapid pace. Just last year, it jumped up an unheard of 43 spots in a single year from 204 to 161!

Asher

Asher means ‘happy’ or ‘blessed’ in Hebrew. Asher has risen steadily in popularity on the Social Security charts year after year. Last year it leapt from 59 to 47, marking the first time it broke into the top 50.

Hudson

Hudson was originally a surname, literally meaning ‘son of Hudde’. It can also refer to Hudson’s Bay. As a given name, Hudson has risen steadily up the charts since the year 2000. Last year, it reached its highest place, jumping ten spots from 64 to 54.

Kai

Meaning ‘sea’ in Hawaiian, or ‘victory’ in Chinese. This is a really cute 3 letter hippie name for boys. For more on syllable boy names, click here.

Rowan

Rowan honours a tree, the rowan tree. Rowan has become increasingly popular over the past ten years and is now edging closer to the Top 100 boy names. Last year it jumped from 140 to 129, and it’s sure to rise again next year. 

River

River is an English name that originally referred to the flowing body of water. River Phoenix popularized this name several decades ago. 

Colt

Colt is an English name that is mainly used in the United States. It originally referred to a young male horse. It can also be a nickname for the name, Colton.

Aiden

Aiden is an Irish name and means ‘little fire’ or ‘bringer of fire’.

Owen

Owen is a Welsh name that can mean ‘yew tree’ or ‘youth’.

Dylan

Dylan means ‘son of the sea’ or ‘born of the ocean’. It is a Welsh baby name. 

Lincoln

Lincoln was originally used as a surname. It translates into ‘pool’ or ‘lake’.

Jett

Variation of the English word, jet, referring to the colour black, or a jet airplane.

Landon

Landon was originally an English surname that literally translates into ‘long hill’

Leonardo

Leonardo is the Italian, Portuguese and Spanish form of Leonard, which means ‘brave lion’. Leonardo da Vinci was the most famous bearer of this name, but Leonardo DiCaprio is a more recent celebrity bearer.
