Birthday Gifts for Two Year Olds

I don’t know about you, but I find two years is a difficult age to buy for. Two year olds are barred from many preschool toys that are made for ages 3+. However many are too old for the baby toys appropriate for under three.

My little one is turning two soon, so I thought I would share my top recommendations for birthday gifts for two year olds. Of course, these gifts also make perfect Christmas gifts, or gifts for any other time.

You won’t see a separate list for gifts for two year old girls and gifts for two year old boys. Two year olds don’t really have gendered interests unless they’ve been taught. Two year old girls can play with cars and trucks, and two year old boys are often very happy playing with dolls. Below I’ve compiled a list of toys that is perfect for any two year old, regardless of gender.

Mega Bloks

My little one loves any kind of building block. She tries to use her older sister’s Duplo, but they’re too tricky for her little hands. Mega Bloks are just right for her age and so much fun too!

Mega Bloks has recently come out with a new plant-based line of blocks! These blocks still fit with all your old Mega Bloks, but the new blocks are made with a of minimum 90% bio based materials including plastic created from sugarcane, a 100% renewable material. They even come in fully recyclable packaging! I am so pumped to be able to give my daughter a sustainable building toy!

Animal Figures

Every little one should have a set of animal figures (or more than one!). They make for great pretend play and there’s a lot of learning involved (animal names, sounds, etc.). This is a gift that will last, as your child can continue to play as they grow. Animal figures make a great addition to sensory bins, or can stand alone as a great toy!

Colour Wonder Markers

If your little one is like mine, they love to colour, especially with the markers they see their older siblings use. Color Wonder markers are a lifesaver. They mark on paper, but not on anything else! A game changer for art supplies!

Little People

Little People are a super versatile toy that will entertain your child for years. My first daughter was obsessed from the age of 18 months to 4 years old. Even now at almost six, she will play with them every now and again. This is THE toy that got the most use in our playroom for years and the one toy I didn’t even bother to rotate in my toy rotation. Little People stand up to the test of time. You can bet my youngest will be receiving Little People for every Christmas and birthday for years to come.

Baby Stella

Every child, boy or girl, should have a baby to care for. Babies make great pretend play, so children can emulate their moms and dads. Baby Stella is a favorite in our house. She is soft and cuddly, and has lots of great accessories. There’s also a Baby Fella (you can even order him dressed in a football uniform) .

Chunky Puzzles

Chunky puzzles make the perfect first puzzle for little ones. With their large, graspable pieces and bright colours, these Melissa and Doug puzzles are just perfect. Great for building spatial awareness!

Fine Motor Set

We love sensory bins at our house. Water play, rice bins, you name it. These fine motor tools are perfect to use in sensory bins. I can’t wait to spice up our sensory play!

Lift-the-Flap Books

Lift-the-flap books are perfect for two year olds. They are engaging and allow your child to be part of the reading experience. Even the most rambunctious child is interested in discovering what lies behind the flaps. They are also great for predicting skills.

At our house, we love Karen Katz books. Her illustrations are so colourful and engaging for children and she has books for every theme and season.

Building Blocks

Building blocks are a developmental staple for any child. These extra large, tough building blocks are appropriate for 24 months+ and are great fun! Children can build big structures, like forts. They’ll also have fun destroying towers you’ve built! These blocks will last for years and are great for a range of developmental levels!

Water Table

My little one’s birthday is in the summer, so a water table is the perfect ‘big’ gift for her. I know she’ll be outside enjoying it every summer for years to come!

Well, those are my top gifts for two year olds. I hope this gives you some great ideas for your little one’s birthday gifts!
