Friday Favs August 25th

Hi Friends!

I am experimenting with a new type of post today. I am hoping to do a ‘Friday Favs’ post every week or two to share some of my (and Hannah’s) favorite things with you. This will be a mix of products, experiences and activities, and I hope to give you some ideas/helpful hints to make your life a little easier, or more fun. Sooooo, without further ado, here are my Friday Favs!

This is sadly my last week of summer vacation. I am back to work on Monday (actually, I have already been back working in my classroom), and my students return on the Tuesday after Labour Day. That being said, Hannah and I have been on a tear to soak up the last of summer vacation and have some last-minute adventures. I know this summer will be one I never forget. That brings me to my first Friday Fav, which is…

Trips to the Zoo

Trip to the Zoo Trip to the Zoo Trip to the Zoo

We took a road trip to the zoo this week (about an hour and a half away). I have mixed feelings about zoos, but Hannah really wanted to go, so Daddy took a day off from work and we were off. Honestly, it was so sweet to see her giggle at the animals and introduce herself to each one (Hi Flamingo, I’m Hannah). As we walked toward the bear exhibit, she started singing “We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re not afraid!” Watching children interacting with animals is so adorable.

Green Beaver Sunscreen

Trip to the Zoo

Our zoo trip was on a perfect sunny day, but that meant sun protection was needed! This week I bought a new sunscreen from one of our local health food store. The sunscreen was Green Beaver Natural Mineral Sunscreen. We got the Kids Spray sunscreen This actually was an accident. I was just looking for a normal lotion, but was browsing without my glasses and didn’t look carefully enough. It turned out to be a happy accident, because I’m already loving this sunscreen! It is a non-nano zinc-oxide spray, made from 100% natural and 34.14% ingredients from organic farming and is certified by Eco-cert. I was actually so happy to have the spray option because it was so quick to apply on Hannah. It went on much easier than the other mineral sunscreen we’ve been using and I didn’t have to worry about residue on my hands. She didn’t look like a ghost either, which was a plus! I would definitely recommend this sunscreen to anyone with kids!

Flamingos

Guys, I had never actually seen a flamingo before this week! They were a new exhibit at the zoo, and I know I sound like a dork, but I just loved them! We watched them standing balancing on one foot and honking at each other.  I couldn’t help but wonder how they evolved to be the way they are and what advantage it gives them in the wild! This was probably not the coolest zoo exhibit overall (Hannah loves the lions and tigers the best), but seeing something new and really interested was one of the highlights of the trip.

Skip Hop Snack Bags

Trip to the Zoo

One of my resolutions this year has been to cut wayyyy back on my plastic use. I usually use glass containers, but I have been sneaking back to plastic bags when packing for day trips with Hannah. Toddlers need so much STUFF to be lugged around with them that a bunch of heavy glass containers just aren’t practical. Instead, I bought Hannah some Skip Hop snack bags for our outings. We chose the Marshall Monkey pattern (I always call her my little monkey), but all the patterns are so sweet. They are great for packing snacks and are nicely lined and durable. They are no problem to wash and air-dry, then they’re ready to go for the next day. I know I will be borrowing these through the year to pack my snacks for school!

These are currently unavailable, but there are few other Skip Hop Marshall Monkey lunch containers we use and love here and here.

Welcome Home

Trip to the Zoo

My last favorite is the nice welcome home we got as we pulled in the driveway. My neighbours have a prolific garden and love to share. They flagged us down to pick fresh blueberries and blackberries for Hannah’s bedtime snack. Hannah will eat ANYTHING from the garden (read my post about gardening with kids here), but she certainly doesn’t need any convincing to eat berries. It was the perfect end to a perfect day!

That wraps up my first Friday Favs post! Tell me about your favs this week, or your must-haves for a trip to the zoo. Can’t wait to hear from you!

Zoo Must-Haves

  1. I agree zoos can be a lot of fun especially with kids. It so nice to watch them be fascinated by the animals. The sunscreen protection spray you used sounds great for easy application without getting the product all over your hands also.

  2. Omg that sunscreen looks super convenient I need to check it out. The snack bags look really spacious, do you mind telling me what they can fit? I bought some small ones from another brand but they can really only fit smaller snacks which is not convenient to be honest…these look great but really sad they aren’t available 🙁
